1950 NY STATE MARKED Alton Dinan custom Colt 1911 - 45 ACP
This base gun left Colt in 1950, one of 500 Ordered by the New York State Guard, and marked as such by Colt, a very rare base gun. At some point, perhaps for a member of the NY state pistol team, it was masterfully converted in to an x—ring smashing Bullseye pistol by Alton Dinan. Alton ran a shop in Canaan, Connecticut. After a long stint in the Navy during the Second World War, he came to Canaan in 1947 where he and his wife Betty set up shop. Being a match shooter, he knew all the top guys of that time. He worked on their handguns, giving them the same superb accuracy, tuning, and ammunition data that he himself used, thus creating tougher competition for himself as the years wore on and his work improved. He specialized in 45’s, however he would work on other handguns, rifles, and even shotguns. The peak of his shooting career came in 1964 when he won the National Civilian Pistol Championship at Camp Perry. Prior to this he had won so many state and regional matches that it would be impossible to list them all. On the evening of March 26, 1977, on a Saturday night about six o’clock, Al pulled out onto Route 7 in his Jeep and was struck by a car going in the opposite direction. He died a couple of hours later. He contributed frequently to “The American Rifleman” and to most of the better firearms publications over the years. His 1911s are easy to spot because they are often adorned with “two hole” front sight—designed so that anyone could look down the line at a match and know exactly who is shooting his guns. This gun is still in good shape, with minor cosmetic wear, but the refit frame to slide and welded up and refit barrel are still tight and smooth. Gun shot well with my mag of testing. The bore is a bit hazy, looks like some leading from cast bullets. Classic custom bullseye gun by one of the greats!
