1943 Union Switch & Signal M1911A1 -- RARE Original USGI US&S
A Keystone to any US Military Arms collection, the Union Switch & Signal M 1911 A1. The Union Switch & Signal Company (US&S), based in Swissvale, Pennsylvania, was primarily a manufacturer of railroad signaling equipment and a subsidiary of the Westinghouse Air Brake Company. During World War II, as the U.S. ramped up production of the M1911A1 .45 ACP pistol to arm its forces, several non-traditional firearms companies were brought into the effort due to massive demand. On May 5, 1942, US&S received a contract for 200,000 M1911A1 pistols. Production began in early 1943, with the first pistols accepted by Ordnance inspectors in January. However, as projected military requirements decreased later that year, the contract was reduced, and production halted after approximately 55,000 pistols were delivered. The final shipment occurred on November 27, 1943. After completing the pistol contract, US&S shifted to producing components for the M1 Carbine. US&S pistols are serial-numbered in the range 1,041,405 to 1,096,404.
This example remains in fantastic shape for an issued piece, original DuLite bluing over a sandblasted surface, correct barrel, bushing, small parts, and Keyes grips are all there. Bore is bright and shiny, action remains nice and crisp. Really hard to find one that has not been re-worked or otherwise mis-matched. This pistols finish is in good condition, though it should be noted there looks to be ‘blood pitting’ or similar wear in the trigger guard and on the grip straps of the gun. Hard to say what caused it, but it was something on the user’s hand certainly, I wish these guns could tell us their story! I have compared this pistol to several other fine and original guns and see nothing wrong with it, this is great example in my opinion.
