1966 RL Shockey Deluxe Bullseye Custom 1911 -- Colt Govt Model -- 45 ACP
Having an RL Shockey in my personal collection has given me many smiles in the years since acquiring it, frankly, my personal one is likely the most accurate 50 yard gun I own. This Shockey has all the features he was known for, the HUGE shop made match bushing, extended front sight with a Bomar rear for max sight radius, great trigger job, trigger wears a classic shoe, hammer is lightened/reshaped, frame to slide refit, Colt barrel completely reworked/refit. This gun is also fit with Shockey's Patented MouseTrap and his muzzle weight setup.
Dick Shockey was a tool and die maker, originally from Pennsylvania, he moved to Oklahoma and set up the machine shop in their federal prison, leaving that position to focus on competitive pistol smithing and shooting in 1955. He operated primarily from El Reno, Oklahoma (his shop was in his house), and built or modified guns sold through dealers like Gil Hebard Guns. His work emphasized precision, reliability, and practical accuracy for NRA bullseye/precision pistol competition.
Note the aggressive front strap stippling, I always like to think there was a gentleman's agreement between Shockey and Giles, as the way Shockey's pattern points to an arrow head under the guard, Giles pattern does the opposite with and inverted point of no stipple at the top, likely just my casual musing, but I think that’s cool.. . . This example is in great shape, tight and right and wears a handsome set of Herrett stocks.
