1972 Rock Island Arsenal Custom Built USGI M15 - General Officer's Pistol - Maj Gen William Read
These are such special guns, Custom 1911s built by the US Government, for the top ranking Military officials to carry! The M15 was developed in the early 70s and this one is serial #41! # 41 was issued in 1972 to Major General William Edgar Read. The General Officers M15 was an outstanding example of ‘custom bobcatting’ of the 1911, done by the best gunsmiths at Rock Island Arsenal, cutting the barrel and slide back, Custom tall sights, high polished blued finish. The checkered front strap and ‘jimping’ on the MSH really plant the gun in your hand. These guns also featured a custom buffering recoil guide rod. Special grips with stainless nameplate in one side and a RIA medallion in the other side. Only 1004 were ever mfg by RIA between 1971 and the mid 80s when they were phased out in favor of the M9. This example is in very good condition, only a few minor age marks and carry wear. Major General William Read had a very long and impressive career, including serving in Korea and during Vietnam.
