Mac's 45 Shop -- Custom Commander -- Undercover "Bobcat" 45ACP
This 1978 Colt Combat Commander was wonderfully converted to this subcompact ‘Bobcat’ by the famed Mac’s 45 Shop in Southern California. Mac’s was most well known for their competitive IPSC and compensated builds, but did build some carry guns as well. I have seen another of these Bobcat’s marked ‘Undercover’ by Mac. This pistol was built for a customer friend of Mac’s that lived near his shop, and he likely had Mac forego the engraving on the slide. See the email correspondence with that gent’s son, the handmade checkered rosewood grips were made by the customer!
Mac’s of course best known for the Nash Bridges Compgun carried by Don Johnson and designed with help from Jim Zubiena.
This little Chop job has a shortened grip, down to Detonics length, and a shortened topend as well. Bomar rear sight low mounted, Tidy checkering panel on the frontstrap and grip safety. Beautiful magwell bevel and overall finish well above what most Mac’s guns were given, clearly this gun got some extra attention.
