Ted Yost Full Custom -- Smith & Wesson 681 -- NYSP -- 357 Magnum
The Perfected L Frame Revolver, maybe the perfect 357 Magnum carry gun too. This One with NY State Police history, in 1981 approx 500 4” 681’s shipped to John Jovino in NY engraved NYSP, an order for the NY State Police, this is one of them. Some time , approx 30 years later, it came to reside with Ted Yost. Ted being the master craftsman that he is could not leave it to languish as just another stock gun, so he set to building his ideal carry revolver. This gun is the result, and was a personal gun of his for a time until a good friend of ours talked him out of it. The gun was cut back and crowned at 3.5”, the heel of the frame beautifully rounded and shod in Ted’s own handmade, high figure, walnut stocks. The action tuned to perfection, with smooth and crisp controls, and a luxurious double action pull. Naturally he didn’t stop there, the hammer was shortened and reshaped, the trigger radius and an OT stop installed, those parts them hardchromed. The charge holes nicely chamferred, forcing cone addressed and topped with Ted’s perfect fixed sights, the most elegant and functional solution to a fixed sight revolver ever conceived and executed.
Ted’s revolver work is so finely done, and very rarely encountered for sale. Ted wrote about this gun briefly when Handgunner was doing a carry gun survey of the staff writers, a copy of this Handgunner is included. This gun is very lightly used since completed, and was fully refreshed when Ted sold it.
