A beauty from one of the greatest gunwriters and collectors of our time, John Taffin spent decades studying and writing about sixguns and their cartridges. One he was most fond of being the 44 Special. This Old Model Ruger was one of his favorites, built by master pistolsmith Andy Horvath. This gun, as described by John himself: “One of the best looking Ruger conversions comes from Andy by combining a Three Screw Ruger with a Smith & Wesson Model 29 .44 Magnum barrel to come up with a unique .44 Special conversion. The full-length ribbed S&W barrel is cut to 5-1/2” and the enclosed ejector rod housing is removed and the barrel is shaped single action style. Andy then added a beautifully blended in undercut post front sight on a ramp base, and shaped and scalloped the leading edges of the Flat-Top frame to mate perfectly with the ribbed barrel; the ejector rod head is full-size and checkered to keep the finger from slipping off when ejecting spent cases, the base pin is #5 style, and the hammer is exquisitely shaped to an elongated checkered oval perfectly contoured to blend beautifully with the rest of the sixgun. Finally the finish is high polished bright blue matched up with a case hardened mainframe and hammer. Adding a stainless-steel Old Army Grip frame fitted with a pair of circassian walnut stocks by Roy Fishpaw results in a .44 Special which is a little heavier than most built on Three Screw Rugers, however this weight adds greatly to shooting comfort and this sixgun shoots extremely well.”

This gun graced numerous posts, articles and I believe is even in the “Book of the 44” . It remains in great condition, note the grip frame was installed by John after being built, thus why the Fishpaws have a different serial on them. Really a great setup here with an awesome heritage.
